The Womb of Spirit – Prenatale Sentience in Dharma-based Therapeutic Practice – Maura Sills

Over the last thirty years, rich evidence has shown that prenates and infants are aware of their environment, registering and responding to their sensory experiences.

Early primary experience leaves a deep imprint on the developing psyche. For the prenate the womb is the entire world, and the mother is the fulcrum of that world.

In their sentience, prenates respond to the womb environment and are very vulnerable to the nature and quality of its relational processes. Experiencing their world “all at once”, without psychological defenses or linear thought, they percieve time holistically with little differentiation between past, present or future. While this creates a beautiful wholeness about pre- and perinatal experience, it also generates profound vulnerability. Overwhelming conditions in utero or during birth are not filtered by thought; they are directly absorbed. There is no veil of thought, only direct experience.

The inflow of early experience sets the stage for future perception, affect regulation, defenses and personality formation. Research demonstrates that bonding and attachment  begin in the womb. Perceived danger, abandonment or betrayal in utero overlay early infant experience, shaping lifelong relational patterns. Even for adults, the world is often seen through the veil of early womb experience: “womb as world, world as womb.”

Understanding sentience and awareness in the womb pushes back the traditional boundaries of personality development. For therapists integrating the Dharma, exploring this primary, unfiltered level of consciousness offers a powerful framework to meet deep-seated conditioning at its very roots with presence, clarity, and compassion.

RESIDENTIAL WORKSHOP

The body continues to carry the cellular memories from our time as Prenates.  Creating a safe and warm holding field there will be an opportunity to revisit, Conception, Implantation and Umbilical Affect.  These territories are “remembered “ as energies or signatures in the body which offer a sensory window and reconnection with our experiences during these important times.
As we reconnect with both our experiences and our responses to them we will have the potential to heal at a very deep level our Wounds of Being and Wounds of Spirit.
